The palpable dynamism in Indian Hip Hop is being documented by a group of individuals representing Dilli 71. Bhaskar, Lil Bhavi, OG Lucifer, TnT beatz, soultrip beats and Nitin Randhawa coming out with Section 71 is a game changer for the trap sound in the country. Everything about the album is fresh, the production, the flow and the lyrics. There are a variety of elements in the album that modulate the rise and fall of the tempo in the project.
The thematic setting which inspires the unique Dilli 71 sound
The album does a very good job of working through a central theme of Dilli and the life they’ve seen. The tracks are focused on the different aspects of life and how it has affected their hood. In the past, there has been criticism of repping neighbourhoods and using slang in lyrics however in order to create an identity of genuine hip hop slang has to be used. This project has touched the very core of Hip hop music in every way.
The thematic storyline of describing crime, drugs, love and all other problems through a medium of expressive music which is new tends to make the album insanely artistic. It is reminiscent of the new age trap sound that is commercially successful and artistically profound. It is commendable how these artists have taken the sounds of 21 Savage, Offset, Gunna and transformed it completely into an indigenous hip-hop production. The project is awe-inspiring in terms of its conceptual clarity and ingenuity.
The tracks are all great because they sew together a storyline and the stories of each artist individually. I was particularly impressed by Loop, Haadsa and Active Sleep. Haadsa is an absolute moshpit stirrer filled with rage and heavy bass. Loop is an extensive low-tempo lyrics heavy track which changes the tempo of the entire LP.
The collaborative effort is laudable as it takes three different vocal artists and three different producers and yet the project fits insanely well. Bhaskar, Bhavi and Lucifer have been making waves in the scene for quite some time but this was their first album. It was a very well-planned effort and I believe a lot of the credit goes to Prince Sabana as well who has been in charge of creating a new Dreamville type of atmosphere in DHH. Dreamville had Revenge of The Dreamers 3 and Project Babies has Section 71. This marks a change in how collaboration works and how it can lead to innovation.
The production takes a positive trap and cloud influence.
The unique soundscapes used by the producers bring life to the project. TnT beatz, soultrip beats and Nitin Randhawa have complimented the tracks so well with a variety of production styles which have been tailored to perfection. They’ve taken the good elements of both trap and cloud production styles and made it their own with the touch of lyrical Delhi hip hop. The tempo of the EP rises and falls making it a complete experience.
