‘STAIRS’ : SAMMOHIT TEAMS UP WITH ABHIJAY SHARMA TO DELIVER THE LATEST STREET ANTHEM IN TOWN

After completing three high-profile collaborations in 2023 [Meherban FT. Farhan Khan, Industry Galat FT. MC Altaf, and Spaceship FT. Ikka & Shah Rule], Sammohit is back with his first single of the year in ‘Stairs’. The Gully Gang rapper teams up with the sensational Abhijay Sharma to cook up his new single which is a clever reference to the game of snake and ladder. The Avrutti member with the board game metaphor shares how he climbed the ladders in the industry despite being surrounded by snakes.

Sammohit - 'Stairs'

Sammohit Embodies the Raw Bombay Grunge in ‘Stairs’

Sammohit is one of the very few rappers in the industry today who knows what the streets sound like. His no-nonsense attitude and direct flow embody the Bombay spirit of less talk and more work. In ‘Stairs’, the Gully Gang OG starts off narrating his struggles in the streets in his formative years. He then shares how those experiences have formed him to be the microphone killer he is today. The Avrutti member boldly proclaims his superiority over rappers with his impeccable references rooted in street anecdotes.

“Yeh Rappers bane bollywood, me South Waala Hero”

Sammohit

Production credits go to the ‘Obsessed’ hitmaker Abhijay Sharma who does a stellar job. The production is grungy and cinematic in nature backed with boom-bap kicks. Abhijay’s inclusion of low-pitched chords and southside funk elements complements the bassline really well but it’s the second part of the beat which steals the song for me. At the 1:48 timestamp of the song, there is a buttery smooth beat switch which in recent memory is the most well-executed switch in my opinion. What makes it special for me is the fact that the switch manages to seamlessly transition the kicks and sample by amplifying it rather than a complete chop. Smart!

Conclusion

All said and done, ‘Stairs’ is a certified Bombay street banger with direct and no-nonsense lyricism backed by a Bombay noir-themed instrumental. Sammohit’s impeccable delivery and metaphors rooted in Abnhijay’s production made this an entertaining listen for me.
