In today’s edition of Feature Interviews, we have Abhishek Nair, a.k.a. 3bhk with us. The Delhi-based producer is known for his unique sounds and the influences he takes from South Asian sonics. The musician sees no boundaries when it comes to sounds and tunes that he works on. Read the interview to learn more about his artistry, creative process and future projects!

Hey Abhishek, Glad to have you here. Before we start with the interview, how would you describe yourself and your artistry to someone unaware of you?

First of all, thank you for having me here on the platform, absolutely interview Virgin here, and I’ll try to be as candid as possible. Well, growing up I’ve always been fascinated by interacting with people, communicating and knowing what goes on in others’ minds and how they convey it. The same goes with my music, I try making music that speaks to all, in its own unique way. When I say “all” in the context of music, I mean breaking free from genres. I envision merging different sonic worlds to craft something unique that speaks to the listener, captivating them.

What was the thought behind your stage name ‘3bhk’? What significance does it have?

Absolutely nothing, the name 3BHK, I am sorry for ruining it, but it has zero story behind it. And that is kinda of the beauty of it, at least to me, the name strikes your tongue and you never forget it. It is a funny story though, I’ve had multiple monikers before this, very very active on Soundcloud back in the day (shoutout to all my Soundcloud homies). I had a year-long stash to release and needed a name, there was this track published on Jwala collective’s Soundcloud and it was titled 1.5BHK, and I loved the name right away, i thought no further and started releasing under the moniker, and within no time the community started resonating back with it.

You have produced and contributed to a lot of the fan favourites from the underground scene. How would you describe your versatility? How do you come up with different sonics and music?

I am by no means learned when it comes to theoretical knowledge, so if you tell me some chords or something like that, I’d be blank. But I believe I have the ear for it and although I know it’s always better to have that knowledge i also believe that it is one of the reasons why I can use some of the edgiest and the weirdest sounds in my music. Again, there’s no reason to not learn it, it’s the best tool you could ever have. I’d rather try to find the most obscure and the weirdest sonic replacement for a textbook sound/instrument while I am making my music.

Your music was used in a Netflix series earlier this year. How does it feel emerging as a bedroom producer to have your pieces used as scores in major shows?

The best placement I could ever ask for! Huge shout out to Ashim and the “Class” team. This one was big for us as Gair Kanooni, to have 6 tracks that I produced and co-produced alongside Sammad. From Soundcloud to people’s screens, could not have imagined. I believe that is when I realized that all these years of being true to my craft have been worth it and I am glad that I have had such a supportive environment of friends and family.

Being a part of the Gair Kanooni collective, you have created iconic projects and singles. What significance do you think a producer possesses in a rap collective?

I come from a very production-driven mindset when it comes to music, and I believe I speak for Sammad as well here, that the producer(s) in a collective provides the backbone to the music that it creates. And in our case in Gair Kanooni, thanks to me and Sammad having that knack for the unconventional and Quest and Tarun being as versatile as they are, it works like a charm for us.

Your upcoming single, ‘Mil Le’ is yet another example of your flexible musicality. How was the creative process this time around?

This is a song that as soon as it came into my hands I just knew what I had to do. I opened up my laptop and got around to it, the rest you can listen to on 8th December.

Tell us about your future projects. Is anything exciting coming next year?

Future projects, well all I can say is that, 2024 mein 3bhk bahut bikenge.
