We spoke to Mumbai and Toronto-based rapper FeniFina about her journey into Hip-Hop, her inspirations, her style and her advice to future women in Hip-Hop and more, here is the full interview:
How did you come up with your stage name?
FeniFina is a combination of my real name & “feni” deriving from the famous feni liquor from the state of Goa in India. Growing up FeniFina spent many summers in Goa with her family, where cashew trees are seen abundantly. Feni liquor also has poignant healing qualities which subliminally can be paralleled with FeniFina’s self-motivational & fierce music which reflect her roots & identity as an artist.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your journey as a female rapper?
My first exposure to music was through poetry. I started writing poems at the age of 14. Eventually writing as a hobby until 2016 after graduating from university in Toronto, I felt the need to reconnect with my home languages (Hindi, Marathi, Konkani). Hence focused on writing poems in Indian languages to remember the language and stay connected to my roots.
What initially inspired you to pursue a career in rap music?
My inspiration to pursue music came from knowing that my poems would have a bigger impact on the immigrant population in Canada. Being the 1st Hindi Female Rapper in Canada.
How would you describe your unique style or sound as a rapper?
The evolution of my sound is my sound. I am self-taught and still learning. I don’t have a boxed-in sound as I like to genre blend and create a unique experience in each song.
Who have been your major influences and role models in the industry?
M.I.A and Lauryn Hill
What message or themes do you hope to convey through your music?
Self-motivation, Inspiration, Feel-good music.
Are there any specific accomplishments or milestones in your career that you’re particularly proud of?
Premiering my music video on Rolling Stone India, Performing at SpokenFest 22 and DesiFest 23.
Can you tell us about any upcoming projects or releases that you’re excited about?
Releasing a new collab project with Singer/Rapper Trichia Grace Ann. Super chill track and a completely different sound from my previous songs.
What advice would you give to aspiring female rappers who are just starting out?
BE TRUE TO YOURSELF! Stay authentic. The goal of hip-hop music is self-evolution. Whether that’s as a listener or creator. As long as you are growing every day, with each poem you write, and every song you make, you will continue to learn and sharpen your skills.
What legacy or impact would you like to leave through your music?
I want my music to touch as many lives as possible. I want people to listen to my music when they want a boost of energy and motivation. This life can get tough but we have to be tougher.
