Iconic Cover Art Stories from Indian Hip Hop – PART 1

  1. Betaaj Badshah – Bagi Munda

The cover art was seemingly perfect when it came to representing the theme. The font and pictures used were identical to the way titles in Bollywood movies were presented. The caricatures and the photos used were collated in a way that gave us a glimpse into the 90s. The bold colors and red shadows were extremely intriguing and created the apt cover art for an album like Betaaj Badshah.

  1. Lost in AMD – Siyaahi X Dhanji X Acharya

The album cover features a map of Amdavad with lines drawn across streets in a pattern that shows the routes taken by the Dhanji and friends in their day-to-day adventures. It relates to the concept of Dhanji moving through a city he knows so well like any other. The album cover shows how even in a city you know so well you can be lost, there are always parts that are yet to be seen, geographical or social.

  1. Sab Chahiye – Rawal x Bharg

A simplistic album cover that shows the different emotions of the duo. The album is a cacophony of different tunes, beats, and bars and it doesn’t follow the same concept. It’s a compilation of different phases and different times in the duo’s lives and how they’ve grown. So many different types of sounds have been used in the album and hence it shows the different moods of the artists. The album art might seem very simple but its symbolic meaning exudes the intelligence behind the album.

  1. Teri Maiyyat ke Gaane – Chaardiwari

As the title suggests, an experimental album full of chaos and screaming. The psychotic nature of the album has been expertly represented in the cover art. A graphic art design with a watercolor style painting was used for the album cover with a snippet. The different color patches and the mouth cut piece suggests how confusion and chaos is a part of our daily life.

5. Full Moon – Darcy

Bringing an air of paranormal experiences to the scene with Full Moon. The font compliments the cover. The cover shows there’s evil everywhere. The visual of someone practicing dark magic without being attached to any religion defines the inherent darkness in people. It’s a comprehensive cover reflecting the problems in human life.

    6. Beere – Tarun

A picture embellished in black and white lined by Tarun’s alter ego “Beere”. Beere is a story of how Beere has been shaped by the culture he grew up in. The picture is a picture of his dad and friends in the 70s. It displays how the way he views his connections is so similar to the way his father has.

    Divyamaan Singh

Remember when, Pete Davidson said Kid Cudi saved his life, Seedhe Maut saved mine. I'm Divyamaan, I listen to music and watch movies and I love football. I believe art is only art when someone falls in love with it. I write to express myself, poems, stories, reviews and everything else. My writing is my creative outlet. I hope whatever I write here inspires an artist to give us music and give every single one of us a song to relate to. When Encore ABJ said "Main simplify karu tere liye, aa mere paas baith, chahe sar se upar paani ho maarta rahiyo haath pair", it gave me the strength to never give up. I hope all of you find your Encore ABJ and every artist finds their Divyamaan.
