“RENT IS DUE”: THE SIEGE RAPS WITH HUNGER IN HIS FLOW AND DESPERATION IN HIS VOICE

After releasing an experimental and much more pop-vibed project in Slightly Better Days, The Siege is back doing what he does best – rap with so much hunger like his rent is due [not pun intended].

The Siege is not your average lyrical miracle rapper whose selling point is solely technicalities. The Mira Road-based rapper is one of those very few artists in the country who can effortlessly write raw street poetry with a fiery flow. He is a poet of the streets.

The Siege in Rent Is due cover

The Siege – Best in the country to describe the lower middle-class struggles

Rent Is Due is the prelude to The Siege’s upcoming EP “Bhaagna, Chhupna, Doobna”. The song is a barfest with every single bar being a quotable. The main theme of the song hovers around the desperation for success. The Siege craftily narrates instances of philosophies and observations from his life and around to match the theme. From dissing rich kids faking hustle to a failed attempt at pitching his songs to music label honchos, The Salim hitmaker’s hunger and desperation to succeed is palpable in his voice and lyricism. It’s hard to pinpoint a single bar that stands out because every bar is outstanding in this piece by The Siege. Rent is Due by Siege reminds me of 2016 Divine with respect to the raw poetry and hunger in his voice.

Zyaada zevar nahi hai bache abhi maa pe, yaa toh pehenunga ab kabar, yaa toh gale pe ab girne waale haar

THE SIEGE

The music by YKSDOG in collaboration with Circle Tone is fast-paced in nature with an 80 Italian gangsta movie theme song sample in the foreground. But what completes the belter of a beat is the additional elements and detailing. While the kicks and high hats follow a pattern of that of a trap beat, the bass, and drums in intervals really boost the impact. However, what stole the show for me was the inclusion of a continuous repetition of a somber fingerstyle guitar melody. As good as The Siege’s lyricism and flow were, it required an equal amount of brilliance in production to complement, and luckily for us, the trio delivered and how!

Me akele Yaha pe khada aur chillata Mira Road,
Bombay shehar me na mujhse koi behtar
Mere launde leke jaake deta hoon toll naaka phod

THE SIEGE

Conclusion

When I heard this song at 12 am last night, I simply couldn’t sleep. I have been feeling low off late but the hunger and authenticity in The Siege’s bars really made me contemplate my own efforts. The song charged me so much that I felt guilty to even sleep. I don’t think I can praise the creators of the song better than this. The emotions in Siege’s voice stem from very personal experiences and I don’t think it’s easy to quantify them in words. If the art stems from a genuine place, it will leave an impact and Rent Is Due certainly did!
