‘First Time’ is the much-awaited landmark collaboration between the flag bearers of the new age trap scene in India – D₹V, Qaab, and Darcy.
The song had high expectations owing to the dynamics in play. People were genuinely curious to see what would it sound like when DFV, who is undeniably an OG in the trap scene collaborates with breakout trapper Qaab and the most underrated trapper in Darcy. While one couldn’t predict the sound owing to the contrasts, the only constant expectation was that it would be an earworm and it sure as hell is!
MUSIC
Skyiebeats aka Nikhil get the music production credits for the groovy music of ‘First Time’. This is the first time I am hearing Skyiebeats and I can safely say that I am thoroughly impressed. The beat is composed of busy hi-hats, and heavy sub-bass paired with super rhythmic snares. The simplistic keys on the loop made the track wavy and gave off a lazy beach afternoon vibe. But adding 808 kick drums was the icing on the cake as it lent credibility to the claims made by the rappers.
Overall, the beat was wavy and captured the new wave perfectly, both sonically and metaphorically.
PS – Special shoutout to the mix/mastering of the song for making the adlibs on point!
LYRICISM
“First Time” is a flex track at its core but with different flavors of execution. It is a celebration of having made it but the form of conveying it is different. While OG D₹V is all about the fame and counting racks, Qaab brings humility into the track and lends life lessons learned post-success. Darcy with his long melodies shares the struggles faced early in his life to communicate his success.
The hook is catchy in the first listen itself and gets better with each listen. Qaab picks up from where he left off at Violette with an on point pen game and a wavy melody. Darcy however was the star for me with his vocal range & monotonous groovy flow.
The Delhi trapper flowed on the beat like butter and it felt like a travesty that the verse ended soon. All in all, the track had wavy melodies and a banger hook and satisfied the expectations in the best way possible.
